don't think any of the large Florida birds are more entertaining than
the Pelican. From as high as 50 feet their dramatic headfirst plunges
straight into the water are spectacular. I have seen a dozen or more flying
in a perfect "V" formation drop and glide not more than a few
inches above the surface of the water for hundreds of yards. There's no
way you can hold back a smile when you see one with its comic waddle as
it goes from fisherman to fisherman on a pier looking for a free meal. In this piece I have painted them in their winter plumage. The top of the head turns yellow and the rest of the neck feathers turns white. In the summer the top of the head is white and the neck is vertically divided one half brown and the other white. |
