Here's something you might not know. At the turn of the century White Egrets where almost hunted out of existence. During the breeding season their beautiful long plumage was a highly prized accessory for women's clothing. At one point Egret plumage per ounce was three times the price of gold! It looked like every last one of them were going to be killed for their valuable feathers. One of the first environmental groups in the United States formed to save them. They were successful in getting protective laws passed and by their efforts the Egret is still with us.
